West Texas Triangle: Owens

The Old Jail Art Center is pleased to join with its partners in the West Texas Triangle Consortium of Art Museums to present a region-wide exhibition of the work of Dallas Sculptor, Sherry Owens this summer! Other aspects of Owens' work are appearing at the Grace Museum, Abilene; the Museum of the Southwest, Midland; the Ellen Noël Art Museum in Odessa; and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (major exhibition). In 2007, the West Texas Triangle museums presented the work of Texas sculptor Jesús Moroles, in 2008, the work of Joe Barrington, and in 2009 the work of James Surls.
Sherry Owens, in terms of artistic theme is very much concerned with the various parts and processes of the natural world.  Her sculptural work utilizes natural materials in a way that seeks to bring renewed energy to familiar objects of the earth, an interesting approach when applied within the context of a museum.  Owens has participated in numerous one-person exhibitions, outdoor installations, and public commissions throughout the state of Texas.  A major exhibition of her work will be on display throughout the summer at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, with companion shows at the four other West Texas Triangle Museums.

On June 25, Owens will team up with the Education Department of the Old Jail to put on a special workshop for kids.  In a collaborative effort, Owens will work with the students to assemble a sculpture from natural objects.  The project will be filmed and made available for viewing on the OJAC website.
