A Cell of One's Own: Nancy Lamb - The Business of Pleasure
A Cell of One's Own: Nancy Lamb is the fifth in a series of exhibitions featuring contemporary Texas artists. Individual artists are invited to create an exhibition of their work within the upper galleries of the museum's historic 1877 old jail building. A native Texan and Fort Worth resident, Nancy Lamb will exhibit a group of watercolors and oils depicting "snapshot" scenes derived from, what appear to be exclusive parties. The imagery focuses not on the well-dressed patrons of the events, but instead on the individuals who make these events possible: the bartenders, waiters, musicians and others whose jobs are to provide for the enjoyment of others. What makes Lamb's works unique are the disorienting perspectives, intense colors, and attention to the smallest of details. Through these intimate, practically voyeuristic depictions, viewers are given a unique view of the symbiotic dynamic between server and served. When speaking about this exhibition and her choice to highlight these people she said, "...the kitchen is the best place to be [at a party}...I'm drawn to their uniforms and their helpfulness. They need their time in the limelight as well."
